General Health Care

General health care for women includes the entire spectrum of a womanís life, not just health care during pregnancy and childbirth. At each stage of a womanís life there are important preventive health care steps to follow in order to provide early detection of medical problems, or to prevent them entirely. Simple steps include healthy eating, regular exercise, and medical checkups. It is important to become informed about womenís health issues.

Keep in mind that medical problems can and do affect women and men differently. Some serious medical issues, such as cardiac disease and heart attack, may be overlooked because symptoms in many women are not clear-cut.

Some medical problems are more commonly found in women than in men. These include depression, obesity, and osteoarthritis. Lifestyle factors, especially smoking, affect a womanís chance of developing diseases such as lung cancer, that were previously thought to be more likely in men.

In general women should remember to try to exercise daily, eat a healthy balanced diet low in saturated fats and high if fruit and vegetables, and refrain from smoking.

And remember, as a woman you'll often focus on health care for your spouse and children, while neglecting your own health. You need to take the time to maintain your good health. Itís crucial for you and for those you love.
